Routes of Samos

3rd Route:
Karlovasi-Potamos-Seitani-Prophitis Ilias-Pythagora’s Cave

Starting from Vathy you can stop at Piaki beach for swimming just before Karlovasi and also visit the mountain village of Idroussa.

Karlovasi is second port and also second largest town after Carthy on Samos Island. Old mansions, amazing churches and deserted leather processing factories bring back memories of the old glories. Karlovasi is the birthplace of Lcourgos Logotheis (a hero from revolution of 1821) and Kleanthis, a folk singer who fought against the Turkish State.

Five old suburbs or –Karlovasia-as they are called by the locals make up Karlovasi: Palio(old), Neo(new), Karlovasi, Meseo (Middle), Ormos (bay) and Limani (port).

Outside of Palio you can visit the Monastery of Ag. Ioannis Theologos, built in 1823.The old icon of Christ that you can admire is an 18 th work of art while the temple contains a novel description of the Virgin Mary hugging a crucified Jesus.

In south of Karlovasi you can visit another old monastery, Prophitis Ilias which was built in 17 th century. Continuing along the road you can reach the mountain village Konteika.

A few kilometres to west is the beach at Potamos with its smooth pebbles and cyrstal clear blue waters. In Potamos you can also visit little church of Ag.Paraskevi. A coast road finishes up to two remote coves that are shelters for the Mediterranean Seal which live in the blue waters of Aegean. These two coves are Little Seitani and Big Seitani.

Karlovasi is ideal as the center of your journeys to nearby villages of Komadeus, Kastania and for hiking along the slopes of Kerkis. In Kastania you can visit monastery of Komisis tis Theotokou and Cave of Pytagora. This cave was Pythagoras hid out with his students in order to escape from Polycrates after the philosopher returned from his travels to Egypt and Persia.

4th Route:
Vathy-Mytilinli-Pythagorio Eupalinos Tunnel-Monestry of the Panagia Spiliani Heraion

On the road to Pythagario we make a small detour to the village of Mytilinii where unique fosilled animals that lived in the region 8-10 millions ago were discovered. But the most impressive are those artifacts exhibited at the Aegean Palaeontology and Physcial Musel that is situated in a modern building on the outskirts of the Village. There are 3 sites in the area that are worth visiting, Eupalinos Tunnel, the Monestry of the Panagia Spiliani and Kastro of Lycourgos Logothetis.

An uphill road leads from Pythagorio to the Eupalinos tunnel and to the Monastery of the Panagia Spiliani. A detour from here will take you to the remains of the ancient wall of Polycrates.

After that ancient city the coastal road links Pythagorio and Heraion is the ancient Iera Odos (Sacred Road) and the settlement of Potokaki. Potokaki extends many kilometers along the beach, hotels and taverns.

In Mavretzei you can see Monastery of Timios Stavros founded in 1592. When you follow the road you can pass to Pyrgos a small village that produces honey, wine and grapes. Then road goes by an order of Pandrosos, Spatharei and Limionaki villages. After Limionaki you can see contours of the mystical small islands of Samiopoula with sandy beaches.
